Here is another encouraging update from one of our Prochorus partners in Cloetesville, South Africa:
LITTLE BUILDERS CRECHE:
Little Builders was attended by 30 children in 2018 of which 11 graduated at the end of 2018. They will move on to Gr R in 2019. The children visit the Cloetesville library once a week where the love of books and reading is instilled. The children are provided with healthy and balanced meals for breakfast and lunch, as well as two snacks in between. Little Builders is attended by an array of different children. The teachers implement parent courses at the centre on Thursday afternoons. Many of the parents have started to attend the training and they have testified that it is helping them with their parenting skills. Some of the parents struggle with alcohol and drug abuse and some are even involved in gangsterism. This is causing many challenges for the teachers as you can see the effect in the children. Some of them are using foul language. The teachers walk a road with the parents and aim to help where they can. Mentoring is done every second Tuesday by the Stellenbosch Area Manager and we have started to invite the parents to this meeting as well.
The Principal, is well known in the community of Cloetesville and has recently attended some courses for trauma and rape counseling as well as “eye on the child” course. These courses empower her to work better with children and to be able to see when children are in danger or when they are victims of abuse. She has also started to do some counseling in the community with some of the parents, children and youth.
Mandela Day was exceptional this year as one of the Departments of the Municipality came to do some refurbishments at the centre. They painted, prepared gardens, laid pathways, and did face painting for the children and teachers. They also brought lunch for everyone.
At the end of the year all the children received Christmas presents from Santa Shoebox. It was a joyous occasion.
We would like to thank all the donors, volunteers, staff, parents and children that made this year an amazing year.
We have used the funds donated by the Ball project to these projects by buying educational toys, balls and other educational needs. Thank you very much for your support. We appreciate it a lot.
